Pollen irritates the nasal passages causing the mast cells to release histamine resulting in allergic rhinitis and other symptoms associated with pollen allergy. Allergic rhinitis causes inflammation and increased secretion of mucus which results in a contest in and a runny nose. Other allergens include mold spores, pet dander and dust mites.
